3D Model Process

The whole class for 3D Foundation was told to construct a character in a style from the 1900s to 1990s. My character would be inspired by such old animated projects such as Tom and Jerry.

Design wise, my character would be based on Tom the Cat. He has his mannerisms, poses, facial expressions etc. It was quite a challenge trying to emulate the style of the show,

I then proceeded to character turn around with a sketch.

Then to digital with Photoshop.

After conceptualizing my character, I proceeded to create my model in Maya. At first I had a very hard time trying to model my character using different shapes and it took me very long to finish. But thanks to the instructors, I was able to completely model my character.

The model itself was very simple in design but the time it took to construct was rather longer than expected.

Next was to texture my character. Unfortunately I didn't bring my drawing tablet during this process. So I resorted to using a mouse which resulted the texture to be made crude looking.

Next was to put joints inside my model, I had to point out the parts where I construct each part of the skeleton. It was a challenge to do the legs, especially when it comes to the bending of the joints.

'
After that I put controls into the joints....

It took me 2 days to finish putting controls to my character, so many tries and my character can now bend his joints.

But one problem remains though, some bent parts looks very distorted, so I proceeded to the final step, skinning my character.

Skinning was admittedly the most frustrating part to modeling my character because you need to be very precise on how your character moves in certain directions. Took me a week to finish skinning. Some obstacles got in the way, I had missed some certain details on my skeleton that it caused some animation problems on my model.

Thankfully, the instructor pointed out the problem and I continued to skin my character.

After finishing off my model, I started animating it. There were a few joints in my model that looked wonky when I bend and position them. I tried my best to hide the dents on my model by positioning my render cam.

For my walk cycle, I took inspiration from one walk from a Tom and Jerry Short

I showed my walk animation to a few of my classmates, they suggest I put more movement on the smaller parts of my model like the ears. So I put a few adjustments to my model.

Here's the finished animation:

Comments

  1. Your character skinning came out really well. The only thing I have to say is that the head movement might be a bit too much; but that is just my personal opinion. Looks awesome man.

  2. The walk animation is great. I would agree that the head bob is a bit excessive, and that the toes clip into the ground. Using the reverse heel joint should fix this.

  3. This is pretty good, the secondary action on the ears is a nice touch the sways from the arms too. Though he looks a little off balance from the back bending there.
